The Val Maira, tucked away to the north-west of Cuneo, is renowned as one of Italy’s most beautiful valleys; it is one of the 12 Occitan valleys of Italy and lies at the heart of the Southern Cottian Alps.
The area seems frozen in time: picturesque and unspoilt, with extraordinary natural beauty. Small hamlets clinging to the steep slopes of the valley are still thriving thanks to the few inhabitants who have chosen to remain in these enchanted places despite the gradual depopulation of the mountains. These villages are enriched by chapels and churches adorned with frescoes of rare value and beauty (see the chancel of the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta, frescoed by Hans Clemer between 1496 and 1503).
Beautiful in summer, this valley also attracts hikers in winter, with numerous ski-mountaineering routes of varying lengths and levels of difficulty.
There are over 100 routes on offer for ski mountaineers venturing into this valley, ranging from trips lasting just a few hours to multi-day treks from mountain hut to mountain hut.
