Although somewhat uneven, the Sentiero dei contrabbandieri trail is a route that requires a good level of physical fitness and puts those who tackle it to the test with sections that should not be underestimated. The route cannot be considered a true via ferrata but rather a horizontal mountaineering route, which alternates between sections of climbing – some of which are equipped with cables – and others that are easier to navigate in single file.
To reach the start of the route, head down from Pregasina along the old Strada del Ponale to the panoramic viewpoint. From here, take the path towards the lake; the route descends until you reach the path known as the ‘Tracciolino’, which continues downwards along an exposed, panoramic ridge to the start of the via ferrata.
We now proceed as a single rope team, secured by numerous pitons and bolts, and traverse halfway up the imposing rock face overlooking the western side of the lake. The route alternates between easy sections of path – which are exposed and should not be underestimated – short horizontal climbs, striking vertical sections and challenging traverses secured with steel cable. A succession of hairpin bends offers participants the chance to take breathtaking photos of the lake and the Sarca Valley stretching out behind them.
For the return journey, you’ll need to save a bit of energy to climb a steep path that takes you back up to Pregasina and the starting point where you left your car.
