The starting point for the full Rio Nero route is at Passo Tremalzo, upstream of the Passo d’Ampola, which is the starting point for the most classic section of the Rio Nero canyon. Once you have put on your wetsuit, neoprene socks, harness and helmet, the mountain guide will explain the activity, the rules and how to behave on the river during a brief but detailed briefing.
Once in the water, you experience a ‘gentle’ introduction to the river, travelling along an initial flat and very calm stretch, which soon gives way to a change in gradient. From here begins a succession of waterfalls that take you ever deeper into the heart of the deep gorge that characterises the full Rio Nero route.
In the gorge, deep sections alternate with more open spaces: in the former, the faint light filtering through the canopy of the overhanging vegetation is barely enough to illuminate the path, whilst in the latter, the sun’s rays create incredible plays of light that bring out the crystal-clear waters of this stream.
After walking a little further along the stream bed, you reach the lower, better-known section of the stream.
You soon come across an adrenaline-fuelled slide to welcome you, followed by jumps and abseils. Slides, jumps and stretches of walking along the stream bed follow one after the other, offering a mix of adrenaline and relaxation as you make your way along.
The final section of the Rio Nero canyon features two waterfalls over 10 metres high, which we will negotiate via two long rope descents, thus bringing this adventure in a magnificent setting to a close. Travelling the entire length of this canyon is one of the most fascinating adventures you can experience. Suitable for those with prior canyoning experience, this canyon takes us to remote and inaccessible places.
