From Cavalese, you take the cable car and then the chairlift up to an altitude of 2,250 metres above sea level at the Paion del Cermis mountain refuge, before continuing on foot to visit the Bombasel lakes and the ‘del Macaco’ pass; up to this point, it’s already a lovely walk to enjoy with the family. The more adventurous, however, after putting on a helmet and harness, tackle the via ferrata. A stop at the summit is a must to replenish your energy and take a few photographs. On the way down, we tackle another, easier section of the via ferrata, which takes us back to the lakes. Before long, we’re back at the lift to head down into the valley.
When is the best time to walk it? The best time is in summer because, at an altitude of 2,000 metres, you may well encounter snow even in late spring. Another reason is that the ski lifts leading up to the Paion del Cermis mountain hut are only open during the summer and not in the shoulder seasons.
Who can tackle it? Anyone – adults and children (aged 12 and over) – who does not suffer from vertigo. The route is of moderate physical difficulty, and the via ferrata is considered easy but exposed.
