Ice Climbing
The combination of autumn rainfall and intense cold creates true works of art. Never the same as the year before, frozen waterfalls take on the most varied shapes: from compact structures where the ice axe has to be swung with force, to thin veils of ice where the pick must be placed with a delicate touch. Climbing frozen waterfalls is a truly unique activity: it grew out of mountaineering in the mid-1970s and today is a sport in its own right.
Routes can be pure ice, mixed with rock sections (always climbed with ice axes and crampons), or completely ice-free, known as dry tooling.
From December to February our team runs one-day introductory courses and multi-day advanced clinics. If you are interested, get in touch, and in the meantime take a look at this great video shot in Val Daone by our guides.
