Climbing in the Brenta Dolomites is a thrilling experience in northern Italy. With limestone peaks, vertical cliffs and breathtaking views, it captivates climbers from all over the world. The area offers a range of classic rock-climbing routes and a rich mountaineering culture. Safety is paramount, and hiring a mountain guide enhances the adventure. Respect the mountains, enjoy the challenges and protect the environment.One of the most famous spots is the Campanile Basso, one of the most iconic rock spires in the entire Dolomites, nestled in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites. It is situated in Madonna di Campiglio and can be reached on foot in about 1.30 hours via the Rifugio Pedrotti or the Rifugio Brentei.Its silhouette soaring towards the sky has inspired generations of mountaineers, and to think that the first ascent was made in 1899, with the rudimentary equipment of the time, is truly impressive! In 1897, Carlo Garbari, Antonio Tavernaro and Nino Pooli reached within 40 metres of the summit, whilst two years later, two young Austrian geologists, Otto Ampferer and Karl Berger, succeeded in reaching the top, bypassing the most challenging section of the face with a spectacular aerial traverse that still leaves people in awe today.Nowadays, the \u2018Via Normale\u2019 is a magnificent climb which, following a spiral route that makes use of the tower\u2019s weakest points, allows you to retrace their exploits and appreciate just what they were capable of. The route is 350 metres long, with a difficulty rating of Grade 4 and a few Grade 5 sections. The descent is made via a series of abseils.It is advisable to spend the night at the Pedrotti or Brentei mountain huts the evening before.
