Once we reach the hamlet of Piovere on Lake Garda, we put on our wetsuits and neoprene boots, harnesses and helmets. After a walk that starts off on level ground along a pleasant path, then, in the final stretch, up a steep slope, we reach the entrance to the canyon, where the mountain guide explains, in a brief but detailed briefing, the activity, the rules and the behaviour to adopt whilst in the river.
Once the briefing is over, the adventure begins!
The first part is really enjoyable and fun: slides and pools of water where you can take a dip, making you feel like a child again for a moment of refreshing relaxation. Then the canyon changes gradient and narrows into a more or less open gorge, alternating between vertical drops and pools in a very distinctive natural setting where light and water interplay to create reflections and sparkles.
After a series of abseils and a few slides, you reach a long slide that plunges into a large pool. From here begins a short, enclosed section set into the rocks, which is quickly negotiated by means of abseils. Once back in the open, you follow an exposed traverse leading to a thrilling 45-metre abseil.
The final stretch takes place in an open area and presents no particular difficulties, as it is easy to walk through the river, but we come across two slides that lead into idyllic pools. The final slide, 12 metres long, is particularly noteworthy: it has a gentle slope and is great fun – truly one of a kind.
A wonderful experience that you won’t forget in a hurry.
