Ferrata Castel Drena

The Castel Drena via ferrata at the Rio Sallagoni is perhaps the most distinctive on Lake Garda. This fascinating and easy route winds its way through a canyon, alternating between aerial traverses and Tibetan bridges in a unique setting.

This via ferrata is suitable for everyone, though it does require a little arm strength and a minimum height of 130 cm (the minimum height needed to hold onto the cable whilst keeping your feet on the metal rungs). It’s also perfect in summer for escaping the afternoon heat.

The Rio Sallagoni Via Ferrata route

From Drena Castle, after a short walk downhill, we reach the entrance to the gorge through which the Rio Sallagoni flows. Once we have put on the necessary technical equipment, we begin the via ferrata with an uphill traverse, aided by footrests and a metal handrail, to which we secure ourselves using the via ferrata kit. The gorge narrows and the via ferrata continues horizontally with a fantastic traverse, first along the left-hand side of the gorge, then along the right-hand side. We reach a wide crevice where jungle-like vegetation surrounds the stream and where it is a must to build your own ‘cairn’ using stones from the river.

It’s time for the first Tibetan bridge! This is followed by a second one after a short walk that first runs alongside and then crosses the Rio Sallagoni.
At the end of the via ferrata, a stretch of path leads back to Drena Castle, where we find our car.
